Summer Ice Cream Dream Vol. VI B-Sides | Promises: Rose X Rose
Updated: Jun 28
After returning from my first trip to Seattle, a city I've longed to visit, I couldn't sleep that night. So what else do you do when you're jetlagged and exhausted from all the walking and traveling and dealing with a swelling depression that would settle in for the next several months? You start making a mix right before the summer dawn, and let the music guide you.
This mix is deeply personal to me. Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose is an (arguably) strongly written film. It's commentary on sexuality, love, loyalty and companionship resonated with me in a new way. I remember taking one of my first trips out of town in 8th grade and returning home with VHS tapes of all three Sailor Moon movies--subbed, no less--which was rare then. You couldn't find anime anywhere in the late 90s, so to find these gems was a stroke of luck and magic. I remember watching them all in my room, but this one really stuck to me. Now, when I travel, even 20 years later, I feel the urge to watch this movie.
Around the Seattle trip, I had been having deep contemplation around sexuality, love, loyalty, ,and companionship. Sailor Moon has been a beacon for me lately, and this playlist digs into those themes.
This is one of the most poetic mixes I'll ever make, and is definitely in the Chillgood 101 realm.
